This area, which was shown on maps as just a spot in the Mediterranean, became a town in the space of a few short years. Tirrenia was born in 1932 as a seaside town which soon became “the pearl of the Mediterranean”, a centre for international tourism which is the envy of many other countries. An ideal location for physical exercise, the area was chosen for the construction of numerous seaside colonies, which can be seen in the architectural style of the buildings in the area.
Tirrenia was also the first Italian town to be selected as a location for film studios. This stretch of Pisa's coastline with its characteristic pine forests is found between the River Arno and the Navicelli canal. Artists and poets were attracted to this charming area. Gabriele D'Annunzio stayed at Marina di Pisa, where he wrote many works, including ‘La pioggia nel Pineto’. The southern part of this stretch of Tuscan coastline encompasses the Migliarino-San Rossore-Massacciuccoli Park, which is home to one of the remaining Italian dune environments and the important Cornacchiaia nature reserve, which is protected by the WWF.
This is the background of the coastline and the background to the architectural style which is home to the enormous farm, which has always been known simply as "The Farm of Tirrenia", taking its name from the seaside town of Tirrenia which is found on the coast near Pisa.
The Farm of Tirrenia. On the coastline of Pisa, Italy
“…..A long stretch of uncontaminated pine forest, a beach and a small fort called Mezza Piaggia join the sea of Pisa and Livorno. The only sporadic inhabitants were hunters and fishermen, the rest is silence…”
